At the "2017 Artificial Intelligence and Computer Vision Industry Innovation Conference" held recently, Liu Yanhua, a member of the State Council and former vice minister of the Ministry of Science and Technology, pointed out that the era of human-machine interaction is coming, and starting from the field of facial recognition, platform mechanisms will play a huge role.

With the advent of the artificial intelligence era, current computer vision recognition technology has even surpassed humans to a certain extent, and computer vision and intelligent unmanned equipment are rapidly becoming popular. As a typical application of artificial intelligence, facial recognition is expected to become the connection point between humans and intelligence.

Intelligent machines constantly learn from humans, bringing more convenience to people's lives and work, making human cognitive abilities more profound and accurate, and allowing people to use intelligent technology to process and integrate knowledge.

The development of artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, big data, cloud computing, social media, and virtual reality is changing with each passing day. Each technological advancement brings the arrival of the artificial intelligence era closer. Ge Molin, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and honorary director of the Tianjin University Applied Mathematics Center Hanbai Joint Laboratory, said that artificial intelligence is a key development direction for the country in the future, and it is also a knowledge-intensive industry. The development of artificial intelligence depends on breakthroughs in basic research and also requires innovation in application fields.

"Industrial innovation is an important way to connect and integrate technology and application, and it is very important for the widespread application and promotion of artificial intelligence in the next step. At the present stage, the development of artificial intelligence presents the characteristics of simultaneous innovation in theory, technology, and application." Zhu Wan, deputy director of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology's Informationization and Software Service Industry Department, revealed that the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology will adhere to innovation-driven and application-driven approaches, carrying out work in four aspects, including strengthening top-level design and coordinating the deployment of industrial development; combining the development of the artificial intelligence industry with a series of major application projects; focusing on breakthroughs in key technologies and key products; and guiding strengthened international cooperation.

Before artificial intelligence was included in this year's Government Work Report, China had already planned and piloted related research and development and application of artificial intelligence. Xiang Yang, a senior analyst of the artificial intelligence industry at CCID Consulting, introduced that under the background of national-level and industry-enterprise joint efforts, software integration, and intelligent hardware advancing hand in hand, the growth of the Chinese artificial intelligence market will be faster than other countries and regions in the world. CCID Consulting predicts that the size of the Chinese market in 2018 will exceed 40.6 billion yuan, with a compound annual growth rate of 25.8%.

In the application of artificial intelligence, computer vision and intelligent unmanned equipment are rapidly becoming popular. Xu Chao, a professor and doctoral supervisor at the Department of Intelligent Science, School of Information Science and Technology, Peking University, believes that in many professional image fields, computer vision recognition has reached or even partially surpassed human recognition levels, such as character recognition, QR code recognition, fingerprint recognition, and facial recognition. In terms of recognition efficiency, computers far exceed humans.

"Facial recognition technology is a typical application of artificial intelligence. Hanbai Technology has already begun to deploy it, including proactively establishing the 'Applied Mathematics Joint Laboratory' with Tianjin University. This is the first applied mathematics joint laboratory jointly established by a domestic university and an enterprise. Through the combination of production, education, research, and application, it has achieved leapfrog development in the field of facial recognition algorithms, created a series of facial recognition products, and targeted security education, community, home, commercial, medical and health, and transportation industries to provide solutions and put them into industry applications." Qiu Zhaoqiang, deputy general manager of Hanbai Technology, said.

Facial recognition has been applied in some industries, such as entry-exit border inspection and criminal investigation in the public security field, airports, train stations, and bus stations in the transportation field, and facial attendance, dormitory access management, and kindergarten pick-up and drop-off in the education industry. Obviously, with the further development of artificial intelligence, facial recognition, as the connection point between humans and intelligence, has huge potential.
